Trauma

Trauma is a term that refers to the psychological and emotional impact of experiencing or witnessing a distressing or life-threatening event. Trauma can affect people in different ways, depending on the nature, severity and duration of the event, as well as the individual's coping skills, support system and personal history.

Some people will develop Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder(PTSD).

Some of the symptoms of PTSD include:

- Reliving the traumatic event through nightmares, flashbacks, or intrusive memories

- Avoiding reminders of the trauma, such as people, places, or situations that trigger negative emotions

- Feeling constantly on edge, irritable, or angry

- Having difficulty sleeping, concentrating, or remembering things

- Feeling detached, numb, or guilty

- Losing interest in activities that used to be enjoyable

- Having negative thoughts about oneself, others, or the world

As a mental health counselor, I focus on helping people who have experienced trauma by providing a safe and supportive space for them to express their feelings and thoughts, without judgment or pressure. I can also help them to identify and challenge any negative beliefs or patterns that may have resulted from the trauma, and to develop healthier coping strategies and self-care practices.

Some examples of coping strategies are breathing exercises, mindfulness techniques, journaling, art therapy, physical activity and hobbies. I can also assist them in finding additional resources or referrals if needed, such as support groups, medication or legal assistance.
